Distant Shores: The Extraordinary War Brides

As the people who lived through World War II slip away from us in increasing numbers each day, there is great urgency to hear and understand their stories before they are lost forever. Backwoods Players is proud to present Distant Shores: The Extraordinary War Brides as our contribution to the Durham Theatre Festival. Based on interviews with 25 war brides, the playwrights have woven a tale of their true stories into a series of remembrances and vignettes in flashback. These women, who left family and everything they held dear to come thousands of miles away to a strange country, all for the sake of love, don’t think their stories are anything special. We disagree. Once you see the stories come to life in this poignant and funny one-act play, you’ll see just how extraordinary they really are. First performed in 2007, Distant Shores was sold out for every show.
Presented by Backwoods Players as part of the Durham Theatre Festival.

July 10,11,17.18 ~ Whodunit?: Death Hydes
Grab your deerstalker and notebook and get ready for another original murder mystery dinner theatre at the museum village. It is 1903 and you are invited to the Grand Opening of the Leafy Glen Asylum in bucolic Woodchip Hollow, to view the latest concept in psychiatric care: cottage-like homes each with a house mother, all overseen by distinguished scientists. The guests arrive, the mayor is ready to speechify, the doctors are in the house yet nobody notices that death is hiding, just waiting for an opportunity!
Written and produced by Backwoods Players, this event is a fundraiser for the PMV Foundation. In addition to the fun of trying to solve the mystery and supporting an excellent cause, a delicious dinner by the Burbs Bistro is part of the package. Doors open at 5:00 pm. Show starts at 5:30 pm.
