1837 Rebellion Boxes | The Scott Rebellion Box ~ An exciting piece of Pickering's history!

• Duffins Creek General Store and Dressmaker's Shop

Built about 1855 to the east of the Brougham Central Hotel, this building and the hotel once shared a common porch. Over the years, the General Store served as a harness shop, County Office, and home. It also served as a post office and an informal community centre where customers could exchange news with their neighbours and the storekeeper. Set in about 1910, it shows the many items which were available by the early part of the century, as well as electricity which was just being introduced to Pickering Township.

The upstairs is set up to represent a dressmaker's shop, also c. 1910. A dressmaker's shop was one of few professions open to a woman making her way in the world on her own.

Please watch your step on the staircase.
